Skinimalism is in: How to simplify your skincare routine
What Is skinimalism?
Skinimalism is the beauty movement that embraces simplicity — fewer products, gentler routines, and a focus on healthy, naturally glowing skin.
It’s all about:
- Less layering
- Less skin irritation
- Fewer steps- who wants to spend 30 minutes on a skincare routine anyway?!
- More visible results
With people increasingly overwhelmed by long, expensive routines, skinimalism has become a refreshing reset — proving that you don’t need 10-12 products to achive radiant, glowing skin.
Why skinimalism works better than complicated routines
Less irritation, more Balance
Overusing actives like AHAs, retinoids or harsh cleansers can damage your skin barrier. A simple routine keeps things balanced and prevents redness, breakouts, and dryness.
Saves time (and money)
Who wouldn’t love a routine that takes 4–5 minutes but still gives great results?
Better for your skin barrier
The skin barrier thrives when we stop over-exfoliating and over-cleansing. A strong barrier = smoother, healthier, glowing skin.
Eco- & budget-friendly
Buying fewer products means less waste, fewer half-used bottles, and a more sustainable footprint.
The 5-step skinimalist routine
This routine works for most skin types and can be adapted with one or two targeted treatments when needed.
STEP 1 — Gentle cleanser
Look for hydrating, non-stripping cleansers. Your skin should feel soft, not tight.
STEP 2 — Hydrating serum (1 active Only)
Choose just one active based on your skin’s biggest need:
- If your skin feels dry, look for products containing hyaluronic acid
- Niacinamide is great for reducing pores, treating redness and oil control
- Vitamin C is perfect for brightening skin, helping to revive a dull complexion, or reducing visible pigmentation.
Skinimalism is about choosing wisely, not using everything.
STEP 3 — Barrier-focused moisturiser
Ceramides, squalane, peptides — barrier support is key. This step seals in hydration without clogging pores.
STEP 4 — SPF (Daytime Only)
A good SPF is non-negotiable and replaces multiple brightening + anti-aging products because prevention is always better then correction.
STEP 5 — Optional night treatment (2–3x a Week)
Instead of using multiple treatments daily, rotate a single one a few times per week. Depending on your skincare need you may want to try one of the following:
- Retinoids help to boost collagen production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- AHA/BHA exfoliators and toners help remove dead skin cells, leaving skin looking brighter
- Peptide serums help stimulate collagen and elastin leaving skin looking plumper and boosting hydration
- Hydrating masks will help to hydrate dry skin
By reducing the number of products you use in your daily routine, you still get results, but at a slower rate, which means your skin is not left irritated from the constant products its exposed to.
Tips for switching to a skinimalist routine
- Rome wasn’t build in a day- start removing products slowly to allow your skin to adjust and maintain its natural balance.
- If a product works for you, keep it. You’re not getting rid of all the products you use, you’re jusing reducing them.
- If you try a new product patch test it first as you may have an allergic reaction.
- Give your new routine 3-4 weeks to settle in before giving up as your skin may take a few weeks to get used to it.
- Be consistent and keep thing simple. Results may take longer to show but you will get there with time.
