Essential winter makeup tips to get you through the cold season
In winter the climate becomes a lot colder and that can affect our skin and how it adapts to makeup. Just like you adapt your wardrobe to suit the colder weather, your beauty collection should receive the same treatment. Here’s some of my top winter makeup tips to get you through the cold season.
Treat dry skin
One of the main reasons makeup won’t work in winter is due to dry dehydrated skin. The constant change in temperatures has a major impact on your skin and can easily leave your skin lacking hydration. Make sure you exfoliate at least once a week and follow this with a hydrating moisturiser. Try L’Oreal Paris triple Active Nourish moisturiser.
Skip the foaming cleanser
Foaming cleansers are really bad for sensitive skin as they often contain irritants that can inflame the skin. This combined with dryness can leave you with a red, irritated flaky base making it harder to get a flawless finish. Opt for a gel or milky based cleanser as they’re kinder to skin. Try Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish hot cloth starter kit.
Don’t skip the SPF
Did you know you can still burn in winter? UV rays are present all year round and can easily burn unprotected skin. A lot of moisturisers contain SPF now as part of the formula so you don’t need to wear a separate product. Try Malin + Goetz face moisturiser.
Create a wind barrier
Whilst we don’t get snow a awful lot in the UK, there are those few occasions when we wake up to a white out. If you have to venture out you’ll want to stay protected- a red raw face is never a good look. You can use a emollient moisturiser like E45 to add extra hydration or wear your scarf over your face for extra protection.
E45 Dermatological cream is great at helping to reduce dry and itchy skin.
Hide the redness
You can almost guarantee you will get red skin during winter, one of the best way to accommodate this is to ensure you have a green tinted primer in your winter makeup. The redness is concealed by the green in the primer. If there is just a small spot of redness you can use a concealer to hide it. Look out for a moisturiser that has healing ingredients that will treat the redness.
Go waterproof
Winter brings rain, sleet, more rain and occasionally snow. All this wetness can cause havoc with your makeup, especially your mascara that can smudge and smear. To avoid panda eyes use a waterproof mascara. Try YSL Luxurious Mascara for a false lash effect.
Quick fix for dry skin
If you’d like your dry skin to disappear sharpish you could try a super hydrating face mask. Apply the mask just before bed, leave it on for 15 minutes and then head off to dreamland giving it time to soak in. Try ELF Hydrating gel mask.
Fix your makeup in place
Avoid your makeup rubbing by using a translucent pressed powder. It will keep your makeup looking great and it’s not as messy as loose powder. Try Shiseido translucent pressed powder.
Give your lips some TLC
Your lips are really sensitive and that can often result in dry cracked lips in winter. When you’re dying to wear your favourite lippy cracked lips are your worst nightmare. You can still add colour to your look without irritating your lips by using a tinted lip balm or even a moisturising lipstick. Avoid the matte or long wear formulas as they are prone to dry out lips.
Add a flush of colour
The one thing that really livens up my face is a good blusher. Peach or warm terracotta shades are great for livening up a dull complexion.
