top tips to take care of your lips in winter

If there’s one thing your lips hate it’s the bitter chill of a cold winter day. Throw in the warm mugginess of indoors and your lips start to go into overdrive. Your lips are very thin and sensitive and as you’re probably aware it doesn’t take much to leave them dry and chapped. My latest article gives you all the winter lip care tips you need to take care of your lips in winter.

Lip care 101- Don’t bite or rip off peeling skin

As tempting as it is, biting peeling skin on your lips can make it worse as it leaves cracks and sores. Use a medicated balm to help heal any sores that have developed.

Avoid lip balms that can dry your lips out

Some lip balms contain contain menthol, eucalyptus and camphor which are notorious for drying out lips. If you apply the product to already dry lips you’re just exacerbating the problems.

Use a lip balm that contains healing ingredients

When your lips are dry and sore it’s important to use a lip balm that contains healing ingredients such as petrolatum, essential oils or glycerin. The ingredients will help to add hydration and heal any cracks.

Don’t lick your lips

The first thing you want to do when your lips are dry is to lick them – but that’s probably the worst thing you can do. Saliva dries out pretty quickly which will result in your lips ending up drier than they were originally.

Apply lip balm before bed

When I’m ill I always wake up with dry lips and a dry mouth, this is often due to breathing through my mouth. Often people sleep with their mouths open and the effect of breathing in and out through your mouth for such a long period can dry out your lips. One important lip care tip to remember is to apply a lip balm before bed- this will create a handy seal which will protect your lips from the effects of anything that happens during the night, including central heating.

Treat the problem straight away

When your lips have become dry and cracked it’s important to treat them as soon as you see a problem. Whilst you may think the problem is only minor, the sores may get infected or even lead to cold sores, which as far as lip sores go are probably the worst to have.

I hope these lip care tips help you keep your lips healthy this winter. Don’t forget to share the post on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest so your friends and family can benefit too.
