5 steps to get the perfect lip – Application steps and tips
Perfect lip makeup tips
Whether you’re new to makeup or you’ve been applying it for years, getting the perfect lipstick technique can take a while to master. Whilst it can be tricky to know the best ways on how to apply lipstick perfectly, I’ve found five ways to keeping your lipstick looking great. All you need to do is follow my simple five step plan on how to get a perfect lip.
Prep your lips
One of the most important steps before you apply any colour is to ensure all dead and dry skin is removed. The best way to do this is to use a soft toothbrush and gently buff away the skin. Alternatively you can try a lip scrub like Beauty Bakerie strawberry sugar lip scrub. Once you’ve gently buffed away any dry skin, apply a moisturising balm like Original nipple balm for lips (£12 at Feel Unique).
Pout when you apply your lipstick to get the perfect lip
When you go to apply your lipstick, smile so you can see where to apply. By smiling you’ll be able to see the full outline of your lips, and you won’t be left with any accidental bare lips. To get the illusion of a fuller pout slowly trace just outside your natural lip line.
Tips on making your lipstick last longer
There’s nothing more frustrating then going out with your lips looking fabulous and losing it all after one sip of your drink. The best way to extend the lifecycle of your lipstick is to layer it. Once you’ve applied your first layer, go around the outline with a lip pencil to frame the colour and eliminate the chances of bleeding. Blot the lipstick and then apply another layer. You can make your lipstick last even longer by applying a thin layer of Lipcote lipstick sealer on top. Lipcote is designed to help listick last for hours.

Easily fix any lipstick mistakes to make sure you have the perfect lip all day
When I’m applying lipstick the most annoying thing is when it smudges or slips outside my lip line. When I use a makeup wipe to try and remove the smudge, it can often result in removing some of my foundation as well. This can be incredibly frustrating, especially when I’m running low on time in the morning. I’ve found the best way to remove any little mistakes is to put a little makeup remover on the end of a cotton bud. It won’t stick and you’ll only remove what you need to.
Keep your lips moisturised during the day
During the day lipstick can start to feel drying, especially if it’s a matte formula. The best way to avoid the dryness is to apply a little vaseline or lip balm in the centre of your lips. Gently dab it on, blot and then reapply your lipstick in the centre.

Thanks for the great article. Some very useful tips and ideas.
This is so helpful and interesting. I shall cope much better with my lipsticks now!
That’s a good tip to just dab vaseline or lip balm in the centre of the lip.
Thanks for this post. I have never been confident with my lipstick application but this has given me a few good tips that I will try.
I’m inspired to put more effort in to my lips today. I don’t know why but I have never been able to master lip-liner application. I always make the shape look wrong, no matter how I approach it but I’ll have another go. I’ve given up on matte as I think my lips are just too dry no matter how much I exfoliate and moisturise. But I need to break out of my safe zone of pinky nudes!
Hope the tips helped! Always good to try something new
