When you’re shopping online and you want to find the right foundation, do you ever wonder what’s the right shade for me? With beauty brands often presenting up to 40+ foundation shades to pick from, finding the right one can be a minefield. Whilst you can always pop down to the store and try it on, sometimes it’s easier to try to find the right foundation online. Nowadays it’s easier than ever to find the right foundation shade online, here’s some tips on how to use a foundation finder tool to find the right shade for you.

A lot of the tools will try and determine a similar shade from one you’re already wearing, so it may be useful initially to go down to your local beauty store to get foundation matched by an expert. Once you’ve got the foundations in place (excuse the pun!) you can find similar shades in different brands online without having to venture out the house.

Let the brand help you decide

Love a certain brand and want to try another foundation in their range? Most beauty brands will offer a foundation shade finder on their website. If you don’t know where to find it simply type ‘brand foundation shade finder’ into Google.

It can be tricky finding the right shade by just answering a few questions, and that’s where a brands virtual shade finder can be a game changer. Simply answer a few questions such as whether your skin tone is cool or warm and let the camera do the rest. For the best results it’s best to use your mobile as often the foundation shade finder tool is only available through a QR code. You may also want to remove any makeup to get the closest possible shade to your natural skin tone.

Findation

Findation is a completely neutral foundation finder tool that recommends new foundations from the brand you’re currently wearing. It even holds discontinued foundations in its database so if your old favourite was discontinued you can find something similar.

I selected my foundation Nars Light Reflecting foundation and my shade Mont Blanc and clicked okay. It does recommend you enter more than one foundation for the best results, but I got recommended a lot of brands from just choosing the one foundation. The recommended brands were in various price points from Elf Hydrating Camo foundation to Lancôme Ultra Wear Care and Glow foundation.

Cult Beauty foundation finder tool

If you want to try a specific brands foundation but you have no idea which shade is right for you, Cult Beauty’s foundation finder tool is great at helping you to narrow things down.

Simply head to the foundation you want to try, click find my foundation shade and then select a foundation and shade you’ve already tried. It will then recommend a shade in the brand you’ve selected that’s the closest to your current product. It will tell you if it’s a good match or if there’s a slight difference in finish. For example I selected It Cosmetics CC+ and Nude Glow lightweight foundation. After choosing Nars Light Reflecting foundation in Mont Blanc it recommended fair beige, but said it may be more rosy than what I’m currently wearing.

Match my Makeup foundation finder tools

With the Match my Makeup tool you can find the right foundation shade through providing details of your existing shade or taking the quiz.

Discover a new foundation from your current product

The foundation match section of Match My Makeup has a huge amount of brands to choose from so you’ll be sure to find your current foundation. After clicking the type and shade you’re using you can decide to try something new, look for cheaper options etc and then your recommended products will appear.

By asking the tool to find a shade similar to your current foundation you will get a huge amount of results from budget beauty to more pricier brands. It may be hard to narrow down the one you’d like to try most but you’re certainly spoilt for choice!

Take the foundation finder quiz on Match my Makeup

The foundation finder quiz will ask you to select the shades closest to your skin colour, then diversify that further by selecting an image of a woman with a similar skin tone and hair colour to you. Once you’ve selected a skin tone that’s the closest to yours you can choose warm, neutral or cool undertones. After you’ve selected that the tool will ask what sort of foundation you want (something new, recommendation etc) and then provide a list of options to choose from. After completing the quiz I was presented with 12 foundations from a variety brands including BYS, Bobbi Brown and Blendsmart.

Online foundation finder tools are really useful for helping you to find a new foundation in the comfort of your own home. They’re great if you already have a few favourite products you’re already wearing, and have already been colour matched. However if you’re completely new to the makeup game you may want to see a makeup expert to recommend the right shade as a starting point.
