Some of the best crime documentaries, horror and thriller films on Netflix
Need your horror and crime fix on Netflix? I’ve pinpointed some of the must watch content you won’t want to miss
If you love your thrillers, horror films and crime documentaries, Netflix is the place to be. In the last few months they’ve uploaded some fantastic content that you will not want to miss. Here’s some of my favourites.
The Tall Tall Grass
This is one very creepy horror movie that seems to flip back between the future and the past. A pregnant woman and her brother end up entering a huge field of grass after hearing a boys cries for help. Inevitably they get lost and realise no matter how hard they try there seems to be no way out. As they frantically try to find the exit they stumble upon dead bodies and the little boy whose cries for help lured them in. When the pregnant woman’s ex boyfriend Travis suddenly appears in the grass, they realise something is very wrong as he reveals they left 2 months ago. Cue a frantic search for a way out, a very strange rock and the past and the future becoming entwined.
The hole in the ground – a really creepy horror film
A woman moves to a new town with her young son and soon becomes convinced he’s been taken over by a imposter. She visits a sink hole behind their home and is certain a monster from within has taken her real son. The film has a real creepy vibe to it and really put me on edge, I would consider myself a bit of a horror movie hardnut so that’s pretty rare for me.
The Confession Killer
When murderer Henry Lucas was caught for murdering his mum and girlfriend Becky, he had a sudden revelation – he had murdered over 100 women. The sheriff was determined to solve these crimes and set up a task force to close open murder cases. As the sheriff took Lucas on tours all over the United states, the murders wracked up to over 200. However all was not what it seemed. A detective and family of one of the murder victims start to realise his story just did not add up. At the point most of these women were murdered he was in a completely different location hundreds of miles away. Unless he had a time machine, it would not have been possible for him to commit the crime. As the series unravels it appears the only way he knew details of the crimes was because they had been fed to him. Whether it was the attention he lavished or his willingness to die for a murder he did commit, this is one twisted story of infamy and police corruption.
Kiss The Girls
There’s a serial killer on the prowl, but he only kills the girls who disobeys his rules – the rest he keeps alive for his own personal collection. After his niece is kidnapped, detective Alex Cross teams up with a victim who managed to escape the Casanova killer to try and find the girls entrapped in his lair. A real gritty psychological thriller that will have you gripped to the end.
The Sinner
There are two series of The Sinner which have completely unrelated stories. At the start of each series the main character becomes a murderer, that much is clear, their reasons for the murder however are only revealed as the series unfolds. Each story weaves cleverly through the backdrop of each characters past revealing flashbacks that fill in the blanks, ultimately revealing the truth of why they committed murder that day. A mystery crime series that will have you on the edge of your seat until the end.
Conversations with a killer: The Ted Bundy tapes
If you know your serial killers, you’ll know all about the infamous Ted Bundy. Responsible for killing 30 women, the tapes are the gritty recordings of his depiction of each murder. Hearing the chilling accounts from the man responsible for leaving young women terrified to leave their house during his killing spree is truly horrifying. One of the best crime shows on Netflix.
Mindhunter
Ever wondered how FBI criminal profilers came about? Mindhunter was inspired by the true life book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. In the show it steps back to 1977 when FBI Agent Holden Ford begins to study a new form of murderer- the serial killer. The show interweaves stories on real and fictional serial killers including Charles Mason, David Berkowitz and the BTK killer.
Don’t f**k with cats – Hunting a internet killer
It starts with a sadistic video of a man killing two kittens. What ensued was a hunt by internet sleuths desperate to find the cat killer. The cat killer becomes infamous, courting his new found fame as he plays cat and mouse with those who were hunting for him. Over a period of years one of Canada’s most infamous murderers releases several other cat killing videos causing further surges of anger from the internet community.
The sleuths analyse everything in the videos from the vacuum cleaner to the plugs to try and find where he was located, eventually settling on North America. Luca Magnotta’s identity is eventually revealed – a wannabe model and actor from Toronto who really wants to make his mark on the world. Despite reporting the torture of the cats to the police, nothing was done – that was until Luca murdered Jun Lin. The video ‘One lunatic one ice pick’ is soon uploaded onto the internet and the police are soon on his trail. After he’s caught he states he was manipulated into the cat killings and the murder of Jun Lin by a client he had when he was working as a escort. Is this true or is this another manipulation by a man obsessed with films and popular culture? You really need to watch this Netflix true crime documentary to find out!
