Steps you can take to improve your confidence
There are times when we all feel a little unconfident, whether it’s starting a new job or attending an event when you don’t know anyone. However if you find you always lack confidence as you’re not sure what people think of you or how to behave it may put you off trying new things. Whilst doing something new is always going to be unnerving, there are a few steps you can take to improve your confidence and embrace trying new things. Once you’re able to improve your confidence you’ll find you’ll start to enjoy these opportunities more and you’ll really start to blossom. Here’s some tips to help you get started.
Achieving goals improves your confidence
You know that feeling you get when you achieve your goal? You feel super proud and it makes you feel more confident in your abilities. One way to improve your confidence is to set yourself daily and weekly goals. Make sure they’re fairly easy at first and build up the complexity over time. The more goals you hit the more confident you will feel. Make sure you keep track of everything so you don’t miss how well you’re doing.
Get rid of anxiety through exercise
For people who lack confidence, anxiety is your enemy. Constant thoughts of am I good enough, what will people think and do I look stupid are ones that probably flood your mind when you’re doing something new. In times like this exercise is your new best friend. Exercising will help you focus, it releases those awesome feel good endorphins and it will get rid of that nervous energy we all hate so much.
Improve your confidence by braving the unknown
Often the fear of failure is enough to put you off even trying something you’d love to do. If you want to do something, no matter how big or small, it’s important that you found the courage within yourself to do it. Sure you may fail and that may knock your confidence, but not everyone achieved what they wanted the first time they try. Remember if you do fail make sure you have the same compassion for yourself as you would for a friend. Self compassion is fundamental in establishing where you went wrong in a positive way, and learning from that so you can avoid it next time you try. One worse thing then failing is to know you didn’t try at all. Once you do attempt it and you succeed you will feel so good about yourself you’ll want to shout it from the rooftops.
Believe in yourself and what you want from life
Do you have big dreams? Whether you want to run a amazingly successful blog, you want to work in television or start your own business make sure you don’t let go of those dreams. People may tell you your idea is silly and it won’t go anywhere, or that you need to get a real job. Don’t let those thoughts invade your mind, stay strong and remember your end goal. After all the most successful people who exist today failed constantly at the start. If JK Rowling had given up after the first ten rejections of her book, no one would know the amazing world of Harry Potter today. Not to mention she wouldn’t be the most famous millionaire and successful author if she had given up on her dreams at the first hurdle.
Keep to your promises
Have you agreed to do something new at work or help someone with a job you’ve never done before? Whatever it is make sure you keep to your promise to see it through. Whilst you may be nervous and feel that you won’t be any good, you’ll be learning new things and you’ll feel great once you’ve completed the task. This sense of accomplishment will improve your confidence and make you want to try even more new things.
Think about your future
Do you have a goal in mind that means you can’t have as much fun as you’d like right now? Whether it’s saving money for a house or cutting down on food as you want to lose weight, things that you really want in life will mean you’ll have to make short term sacrifices. Whilst it may make life boring whilst you’re striving to achieve your goal, knowing that you’ll get where you want to be at the end is something to hold on to. Think how confident you’ll feel once you’ve hit your goal.
Make sure you do the things you love most
Have you ever noticed confident people exude joy and happiness? When you feel happy you’re more likely to go into a unknown situation with a smile and a desire to make the most of the opportunity. Improve your happiness by doing more things you love, whether that’s swimming, reading your favourite book, binging on Netflix or playing with your pet. Try to set aside time each day to do one thing you love, over time this will really make you enjoy life more.

Don’t compare yourself to others
Everyone is unique and that includes you. If you start criticising yourself as your friend has achieved so much more then you, you’ll start to feel bad about yourself. Everyone does things at their own pace, and you don’t know what setbacks your friend faced to get where they are today. If you ever start to start thinking what has she got that I haven’t, think about what you’re good at and write it down. Every time you feel those negative thoughts, you can pull out your strengths journal and know you’re just as good as anyone else.
Say goodbye to negative Nellys to improve your confidence
When you surround yourself amongst negative people, that negativity can start to bring you down. When all you hear is comments that you’re not good enough, you’ll start to believe it and that can really start to sap your confidence. Try to remove negative people from your life and focus on surrounding yourself with positivity energy.
Make sure you take care of you
If you’re not taking care of your body, you’re not going to feel good about yourself. A poor diet can mean you’re not getting the nutrients you need to feel healthier and more energised. A happy health body equals a happy healthy mind. When you’ve got the energy to do what you want you’ll feel happier and more confident.
