Asides from paying for rent or a mortgage, doing the weekly shop can often be the biggest drain on your resources. So what if I told you that you could get paid to do your supermarket shopping? With Shopandscan you can earn up to £88 per year just for scanning the shopping you buy. The program is run by the survey panel Kantar and is designed to help big brands understand the sort of products people are buying. Over time this will help them create more of the products you love and enjoy.

How does the Shopandscan program work?

When you sign up to the program you will be asked to fill in household data so Kantar know who’s going to be doing the weekly shop. You will be sent a clicker (which is basically a scanner), a USB cable to connect to your computer and a book with all the relevant information you’ll need to scan your shopping.

After you’re accepted onto the program you should be asked to do a test scan, this will get you a bonus £10.00 for scanning three barcodes (your name, a shop and an amount). The test scan will also give you a insight into the sort of items you’ll need to scan each week. After you’ve done your test scan you will be expected to transmit every week. Your weekly shop transmit is pretty simple and the steps are as follows:

  • Scan the name of the person doing the shopping.
  • Scan the shop you did the shopping in.
  • Scan the receipt amount.
  • Then start scanning each item you purchased. If there’s anything that doesn’t have a barcode you can look over the codes in the book to find something that matches the item. For example they have sections for fruit, vegetables, meat, bakery items and fish.
  • After you’ve scanned everything plug the USB cable into your computer so you can transmit your barcodes. Before you can transmit you will need to download their free app. You need to transmit every week even if you haven’t done any shopping. If you keep missing weeks without transmitting they will eventually remove you from the panel.
  • You can transmit more then once a week if you do more shopping, but I don’t think you get any extra credits for doing so.

What can you earn for each transmission?

Every week you transmit your barcodes you will earn 1100 points. You can also submit a copy of your receipt for a extra 500 points giving you a total of 1600.

Sometimes you can sign up to extra programs on the panel which can earn you extra points such as food diaries.

What rewards can you purchase with Shopandscan?

There are a wide range of rewards you can purchase with your points including high street vouchers, Amazon vouchers, experience vouchers and more. Once you hit £10 (10,000 points) you can cash out. You could also save your points up up till the end of the year for Christmas presents.

ShopandScan is a decent little panel that rewards you for doing the shopping you’d do anyway. You’re probably used to scanning your shopping in store using a scanner to get money off, the concept of this panel is very similar. It has a good variety of rewards to choose from as well.

The panel is invite only, to sign up show your interest in signing up head over to the Volunteer4panel. You may be invited to join quickly as they are looking for new members at the moment. If they’ve reached capacity you may have to wait a little while. You may also have noticed they were recently asking for new panel members on Facebook (this is how I got my invite). If you scroll through your newsfeed you may see their ad asking people to join.

I hope you enjoy making extra money for doing your supermarket shopping. Do let me know what you think of Shopandscan if you sign up. If you think your friends and family would love to know more, please give the post a share on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.
