Discover how to take care of your nails during the lockdown

We may be all stuck indoors at the moment, but that doesn’t mean your nails have to look rubbish. Discover the best way to take care of your nails outside the salon.

As we are all indoors, many of us will start worrying about our overgrown fringe or our damaged nails. While all the hair and beauty salons have now closed, it may be time for you to start thinking of doing some beauty treatments yourself. I wouldn’t advise cutting your own hair; it can be quite dangerous, and you may end up with a terrible haircut! However, doing your nails can be done in the comfort of your own home, it won’t be salon quality but not far off. Here are my four tips to help you keep a good nail routine.

Invest in a good nail polish

If you want beautiful nails that will last longer than one day, I would advise to steer clear from cheap nail polishes and invest in a decent professional gel polish. A quality gel polish tends to be stronger and will give you a long-lasting shiny finish. They’re also low maintenance so you don’t have to worry about having to take care of it and adding extra layers that could damage your nails in the long run.

drink water to stay hydrated and keep your nails healthy

Stay hydrated

Just like everything else, keeping hydrated and drinking plenty of water is essential for having healthy looking nails, hair and skin. In fact, water has been proven to increase the skin elasticity and clear your skin if you’re suffering from blemishes for example. For your nails, water helps create a layer of alpha keratin which makes them look super shiny.

Take care of your cuticles

Most people don’t really think or care about nail cuticles, however, I think it’s important to take care of them properly because they’ll help you grow healthy and stronger nails. If you neglect them, you could end up with a painful skin infection. Firstly, leave the cut of your cuticles to your beautician, I wouldn’t recommend trying to do it yourself- however, you could concentrate on nourishing them as much as possible ready for your next appointment. Cuticle oils are great because they’re basically a face cream for your nails, they’re a moisturising product and work wonderfully.

Eat healthily!

You may not know this, but you can definitely make your nails look better, simply by eating the right kind of food. In fact, Vitamin E has been proven to help maintain healthy nails so make sure you stock up on almonds! Fat is also a key nutrient, so you could try to add avocados, olive oil and yet again, nuts to your diet. Over time you nails will be left looking strong and smooth – perfect for when you’re ready to book your salon appointment when the lockdown is over!

It’s clear you don’t need to let a lockdown get between you and great looking nails. All you need is things like healthy food and professional nail polishes and you can almost recreate the salon experience yourself – all in the comfort of your living room.
