Dr Oetker Old School Cake Mix review
Out of all the cakes in the world, one of my favourites has to be old school cake. It’s simple to make, but tasty and it always has you coming back for more. It’s easy enough to make from scratch, but if you’re short for time, an old school cake mix definitely comes in handy.
I picked up Dr Oetker Old School Cake Mix from Tesco (but you can also get it from Amazon). Let me show you how easy it is to make and whether it passes the taste test.
Inside the Dr Oetker Old School Cake Mix you’ll find:
- Vanilla cake mix
- Vanilla icing mix
- Sprinkles
- Baking tray
To make the cake you just need to add two medium eggs, 30ml (2 tablespoons) vegetable oil, 110ml water for the mix and 20ml for the icing.
Here’s how to make it:
- Step 1- preheat the oven to 180•c / 160•c fan/ gas mark 4 around 10 minutes before the cake is ready to go in the oven. You can also assemble the baking tray during this time, however I decided to use my own tray as the cardboard tray is so flimsy!
- Step 2- Mix together the vanilla cake mix, the eggs, water and vegetable oil until mixture is smooth.
- Step 3- Place the mixture in your baking tray and then put it into the preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. I was surprised by how smooth the mixture was compared to other cake mixes I’ve used. Place
- Step 4- Take the cake out the oven and leave the cake to cool.
- Step 5- Mix together the vanilla icing mix, with 20ml of water until the icing is smooth and spreadable. it may help to add the water in gradually to avoid the icing being too loose. You can also create buttercream icing if you prefer, but I like to keep my old school cake traditional.
- Step 6- Top the icing with sprinkles before the icing sets, and cut the cake in two twelve slices. Enjoy!
The Dr Oetker Old School Cake Mix is super easy to make and only requires a few extra ingredients, most of which you probably already have in the cupboard.
The mixture comes out smoother than other cake mixes I’ve used, and the icing had the perfect consistency. Whilst the icing was easy to apply, I did find it pooled in the corners and it was a bit difficult to get a thicker consistency on the centre of the cake. Once the sprinkles were on though the cake looked fantastic, and you can’t even tell the icing is thin in parts. You can buy the cake mix here.
Is Dr Oetker Old School Cake Mix worth it?
The cake was really moist, and the icing made the cake even sweeter. I did find the icing didn’t dry fully which was a bit annoying, but it didn’t distract from the taste too much.
Overall the cake is quick and easy to make, and would be good to rustle up if you don’t want to run around making it all yourself. However I have to say I did prefer the B&M old school cake mix which had a simpler recipe that didn’t require vegetable oil.
I feel the oil weighs it down and could probably be substituted with butter for a nicer taste. Does it beat homemade old school cake as it is? Sadly not, however if you add some butter I’m sure it’d b a great contender.
I give it:
