How to wear bold lipstick colours

Put that neutral lippie down and show the world how you can rock bold lipstick colours

How to wear bold lipstick colours

When you wear lipstick do you feel like you have to stick to nude or neutral shades in fear of looking over the top? Whilst it may not be something you’re used to, once you’ve grasped the basics you’ll wear a bold lipstick with pride. With the official announcement of Summer in just a few weeks it’s the perfect time to wear bright bold lips, with beach hair and floaty dresses. Here’s some tips on how to wear bold lipstick colours.

Decide on your colour

First you need to decide what colour you’d love to wear. Are you more of a bubblegum pink or postbox red kind of girl? Don’t be afraid to try something completely out there, it’s time to try something different!

find the best lipstick shade for you

When you start lipstick shopping you’ll find that there are literally hundreds of different variants of your favourite colours. Try to break it down into the kind of lipstick shade you want- do you want a cool toned lipstick or warm? You’ll find that cool toned lipsticks have more blue in them whilst warm toned have more orange or yellow. Go for a lipstick that suits the tone of your skin- you can find out whether you’re warm or cool by looking at the veins on your wrists. If your veins are blue your skin has cool tones, while if they’re more green then it’s more warm.

Don’t forget certain colours may not look right with your complexion. For example if you have really light pale skin, a light pink will wash you out. You’ll also find that dark shades won’t be very noticeable on darker skin. The best way to find out what suits you is to give them a try, that’s what the testers are there for after all!

They didn’t make Rome in a day

Getting used to bolder lipstick can come as quite a shock sometimes. If you’re only used to seeing yourself wearing a nude lippie, it may shock to see yourself in the mirror rocking a bold red. Like anything it may take some time to get used to, start off by wearing your new bold lip colours for casual outings like walking the dog or heading down the local shop. You’ll find that people won’t even bat a eyelid and this will fill you with confidence for wearing it to a big event.

Get your lips ready

Bold lipstick colours are not exactly forgiving so you’ll want to make sure you’ve got a clear canvas to start with. Use a lip scrub to get rid of any dead skin so your lips are smooth. The colour will then go on like a dream and there will be no rough patches.

wear lip liner to get the perfect lipstick finish

To avoid bleeding and uneven lines make sure you invest in a lip liner. By applying the lip liner fully to your lips you’re giving your bold lipstick colour something to grip to so it lasts for longer. You’ll have even bold colour that looks great.

Make your lips the main attraction

You want your lips to stand out right? Well make sure they remain your main focus. If you go for bold eyes, bold lips and full on contour you may find your lips colour gets lost amongst your makeup. Plus a full face of makeup is probably more suitable for a heavy night out then a day at work. Keep focused on your lips and keep the rest of your makeup fairly neutral. Think long lashes, rosy cheeks and a dewy fresh face.

The only other thing I’d say is just go for it. Pop on your bold lipstick colour and wear it with pride!
