Experience a taste of the countryside at The Green Man, Longfield Kent

On Saturday we were invited to trial the menu at the newly renovated The Green Man pub in Longfield, Kent. The rustic rural escape is based in the country village Longfield just outside of Gravesend. The pub has a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was used as a farmhouse to brew ale for farm workers. The name the green man descends from the legend of a green branch being hung outside a window to indicate the ale was ready to drink.

I first found out about The Green Man when I was invited to try some pieces from their new menu. Last time it was very busy due to the reopening and I found it hard to get parked. Luckily I had no issues when I went to try out the main menu.

The Green Man has a range of wholesome, tasty pub food that varies according to the season. These include classics like Hunters Chicken and Steak and Mushroom pie in addition to delicate dishes like Roasted Vegetable Tart and British Venison steak. There are also dishes for lunch such as salads and sandwiches and of course a collection of desserts to satisfy those with a sweet or savoury tooth. For those who like a tipple with their food there is a large number of cask ales and fine wines.

The pub had a really comfortable homely feel to it and there were lots of paintings and other decor that gave it a real country  feel. The pub was relatively quiet but there were a few kids stomping around upstairs. I thought it was nice how they accommodate for thirsty dogs too!

For my starter I had a hearty homemade tomato and basil soup that was to die for. It had a rich tomato taste with thick tomato chunks mixed in. I’m not the biggest fan of basil but it was so well mixed in it didn’t distract from the intense tomato taste at all. I adore homemade soup and this really hit the mark.

For our mains I went for 9 oz sirloin steak, triple cooked chips, tomato and homemade onion rings. My mum opted for the Hunters chicken with barbecue sauce, cheese, bacon and mash. I like my steak to be well done as I’m not a fan of bloody meat and find this can sometimes affect how tender they are. The steak however was easy to cut and eat and I didn’t find myself chewing endlessly to get through it either. The chips were thick potato cut with a crunchy outside and a warm soft potato middle.

The waitress who served us was lovely and couldn’t do enough to make sure that we were comfortable and didn’t need anything else.

We had a great visit to The Green Man pub, the food tasted great and the service was faultless. A great country retreat if you’re heading through the area.
